AmeriCorps is celebrating 30 years of service to communities throughout the nation. AmeriCorps offer plenty of volunteer opportunities, for people of all abilities. Organizations affiliated with AmeriCorps are looking for tutors to help kids with reading, math and early learning in the Northland.

AmeriCorps celebrating their 30 years of service, also happened in Duluth. Mayor Roger Reinert proclaimed this week at AmeriCorps week, for their service to the community.

“We’ve got a couple of great AmeriCorps volunteers within the city, we’re sad to lose as they come to the end of their contribution. But you know, you go all the way back in time and this connects to things like the original Peace Corps,” Mayor Reinert said. “It’s just an opportunity for individuals to be involved, to be giving back to our communities, to our country.”

Volunteers with AmeriCorps help enhance school-age students with social emotional learning skills. The students learn these skills through enrichment programming and individualized support.

Lindsey Molstad with AMPACT, said the AmeriCorps program provide volunteerism of any kind.

“Across our community in Duluth, we’re looking for tutors to help with education, in our schools. We’re looking for people to help with social-emotional support, and out of school time programs,” Molstad said. “We’re looking for members to help our community organizations with all sorts of ways. There’s an opportunity for everybody.”

One of the main programs AmeriCorps offer is the Reading, Math and Early Learning Corps. These programs help kids as young as five to become stronger readers, and further their education. Sandy Christian, with Reading Corps said she plans on serving for the next few years helping kids learn to read.

“I started with Reading Corps this year and I’m working with all kindergarteners. When I retired from education and doing a lot of other things. I came to Duluth because I was living in Spokane, Washington for quite a while. When I came here, I wanted to get connected with the community. I had some experiences with AmeriCorps members back in Washington. I thought, ‘I think I’m going to look into that,’ and I am so glad that I did.”
