A local company is helping to fund a new learning course at Superior High School

Having a trade or specialized skill is handy and can be turned into a job. It is a route many young people have considered after they graduate high school.
On Wednesday, Cenovus Superior Refinery presented a $50,000 check to Superior High School to help provide new equipment and supplies for their new Spartan Manufacturing course.
The course was established this year and is set to become the newest technology education class at the high school. A small group of students with a history of success in tech education helped with the program’s soft 2022 start.
Senior Edward Hakanson shares what the new course means to him and the school, as it provides him with different options after graduation. “It’s a place where I can be myself more than any other class. This has always been something that has interested me. For the school, it provides a great opportunity for students to learn real-life skills in a real setting.”
The new equipment and supplies are expected to arrive on campus early next year, with the course starting to hold classes at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
Students will have the opportunity to get firsthand experience in learning about different trades and how to run and real-world business experience. “I am super excited for this program because, like, it is going to be able to get us a lot of like on-the-job training and like experience in the manufacturing, and it’ll be a really fun and super fun program for the school,” said 11th grader Jonah Peterson.
As the new course continues to get underway, Tech Education teacher and Program Coordinator Adam Kuhlam hopes this will provide students with different perspectives and opportunities. “We are really looking forward to seeing the students thrive in some of those leadership roles, given the opportunity to interact with real-life customers instead of just teachers here at the high school. And we want to send them towards graduation knowing that they are going to be successful in their next step in life.”
