Students at Merritt Elementary in Mountain Iron are celebrating I Love to Read Month throughout February, and they have a goal of racking up 275,000 minutes worth of reading.

“All the elementary students are to read at home, record their minutes read, and turn them in for prizes,” fourth grader Ebba Nelson said.

250 minutes earns you a snack pack of popcorn, some candy, and a pencil. 500 minutes gets a student a book from the Scholastic Book Fair. If they reach 1,000 minutes of reading, they get a $5 gift card to a local movie theater.

“This February, our theme is ‘Lights, Camera, Read!’ And we invite guest readers every week to read in some classrooms,” sixth grader Noah Frosaker said. “And we have some fun dress-up days too.”

The school invited WDIO’s Baihly Warfield to read to the kids. She selected the book “Three Cheers for Kid McGear” for the kindergartners and “Cozy” for the first through third graders.
