Duluth Community Education will get a share of $1-point-4 million dollars in grant funding to help with their safe route efforts. They plan to use that money to hire a specialist.

“This grant will fund a fulltime position for three years,” said Annie Schilling, Community School Coordinator or ISD 709 Community Education. “The position will coordinate across all of the elementary schools and middle schools, the creation and implementation of safe routes for students walk or bike to school.”

To determine what routes can be considered safe routes, they are surveyed, walked, and biked.  After that, any improvements that need to be made, like sidewalk restoration are then done with the help with the city municipality. Schilling said the new safe coordinator will be hired this summer.
