Western Michigan plane crash kills pilot and sole passenger

SHELBY, Mich. (AP) – State police say a small plane has crashed in western Michigan, killing the pilot and another man who were the aircraft’s only occupants.

Michigan State Police said Saturday that the single-engine plane crashed about 6 p.m. EDT Friday in Oceana County’s Shelby Township, killing 56-year-old pilot Raymond Gundy of Muskegon County, and his 48-year-old passenger, Troy Caris of Holton.

WOOD-TV reports police said the plane crashed after taking off at Oceana County Airport, about a mile and a half northwest of the crash site. State police said the Federal Aviation Administration was on the scene and representatives from the National Transportation Safety Board were expected.
