Wednesday Night at the Races canceled tonight

Due to the threat of severe weather, the debut of this summer’s Wednesday Night at the Races series has been canceled. Organizers say this event will not be rescheduled. The Young Athletes Foundation (YAF) and Grandma’s Marathon expected to return the popular kids’ races at Proctor High School, but severe storms in the forecast led to the decision to cancel.

The Wednesday Night at the Races series will now begin on August 4 at Duluth East High School. Races will start at 6:00 p.m. each week, and participants will be separated into different heats based on the number of kids in any specific age group.

The rest of the summer schedule, along with locations, is listed below:

August 4 – Duluth East High School
August 11 – Superior High School
August 18 – Hermantown High School
August 25 – Wade Stadium (includes year-end picnic)

The Wednesday Night at the Races series is free and open to all children ages 14 and under, with adaptive and wheelchair athlete opportunities available at all locations. Participants, based on age, will have the opportunity to complete either a 1/8-mile, a 1/4-mile, or a 1/2-mile course, and every child will also receive a ribbon after finishing and be entered in weekly prize drawings.

Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to register in advance at grandmasmarathon.com. Kids and their families can register for all remaining events at once, or pick and choose the dates and locations that work best for them. On-site registration will also be available each week starting at 5:00 p.m.
