It hadn’t been since 2012 when Leah Holmes closed out her fourth straight state race that the Superior High School Cross Country team sent a girl to state.

That all changed Saturday when the Spartans were represented by freshman Tayler McMeekin at the 2021 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) meet. Making her first state appearance McMeekin raced to a 19th place finish.

"It was really cool, I didn’t expect it but yes being in that top 20, it showed that all my hard work paid off," McMeekin said. "It was an up hill [battle] but it was the last one of the season and I needed to finish strong, so I just ran it out."

Head coach Lee Sims said he knew she’d be special after watching her break Holmes’ program mile record back in middle school.

On the Wisconsin Rapids course McMeekin finished the Division 1 5,000 meter with a time of 19:37. With a personal record of 19:11 McMeekin was pleased with the final result.
