For the last ten seasons Spencer Aune has led the benches of the Virginia girls basketball team. Now the coaching veteran will help usher in a new era of Iron Range hoops, as on Monday night Rock Ridge named Aune their first-ever boys basketball head coach.
"It’ll be challenging, but it’s going to be a fun challenge to bring these communities together," Aune said about Virginia and Eveleth-Gilbert. "They’ve always been rivals so now we have to learn to play together on the floor. That’s goal number one is to bring them together, and two is just to have a lot of fun because that’s what high school sports is."
Aune shared that while he’ll miss the girl’s program he is excited to help build the boys up in their inaugural season.
Before Virginia he did spend time with the Hibbing boys basketball team as an assistant coach.
????Congratulations to Spencer Aune as he becomes the first Head Coach of The RockRidge Boys Basketball Program!!! @SamAliSports @MesabiTribSport @MHalverson6 @AliciaTipcke pic.twitter.com/gQ17ZmHwCA
