One man dead after shooting self during standoff with Cloquet police

As per the Cloquet Police Department, one man is dead after shooting himself following a stand-off with police Saturday morning.

At approximately 10:19 a.m., the Cloquet Police Department, Fond du Lac Police Department, Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a home on Ridge Road in Cloquet on a report of a man armed with a gun who entered the house and threatened the residents.

The responding officers were able to get others out of the house safely.

Officers negotiated with the suspect to get him to surrender for more than two hours.

When negotiations failed, officers used less than lethal efforts to bring an end to the event.

While attempting to bring the incident to a peaceful ending, the man produced a handgun and took his own life.

None of the officers on the scene were injured nor did they discharge their firearms.

The name and identity of the deceased 20-year old from the Twin Cities will not be released at this time; pending next of kin notifications
