One killed, three injured in serious crash near Ely

A fatal crash closed a portion of Hwy 1 Thursday night.

The Minnesota State Patrol says 72-year-old Patricia Jo Marsnik of Ely was killed.

She was a passenger in a Chevy Silverado. According to the State Patrol, the Silverado was headed north on Hwy 1 when a Subaru Crosstrek driving south crossed the center line.

The 74-year-old driver of the Silverado has injuries that are not life-threatening. He was taken to Essentia in Duluth. Another Silverado passenger, an 80-year-old man from Ely, sustained life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Subaru, a 38-year-old from Superior, also has life-threatening injuries.

The eastbound section of Hwy 1 was closed for hours between Bradach Road and Railroad Trail, about 6 miles west of Ely. That section is also Hwy 169.

It happened just before 5 p.m. Thursday. Snow and ice were reported on the road.
