Northlanders celebrate Finland’s Independence Day

The Finlandia Foundation Northland Chapter gathered at the South Pier Inn in Duluth Monday evening to in honor of Finland’s 104th Independence Day.

Ira Salmela, who was born in Finland and has lived in Duluth for the last 20 years, saying the event was special way celebrate in spirit with those back in Finland.

“Our friends and family members are celebrating it in Finland, so we want to do something special and also honor the big day,” said Salmela. “My grandparents fought in the war and helped keep Finland independent.”

Salmela went on to say that its important to always keep what freedom and independence really mean in mind.
