In a rivalry matchup between University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey head coach Scott Sandelin and his son, Minnesota State University (MSU), Mankato junior forward, Ryan Sandelin, it was the Mavericks that would come out on top Thursday night.

Tied 1-1 after regulation MSU’s Cade Borchardt would score the game-winner in overtime for the 2-1 Mavericks win at home.

Jesse Jacques scored the sole goal for UMD in the third period to tie the game 1-1. MSU scored first in the second period.

Bulldog goalie Ryan Fanti tallied 28 saves in the loss. While netminder Zach Stejskal didn’t clock any minutes, he did suit up on the Bulldogs bench after a prolonged absence due to his battle with testicular cancer.

UMD (11-7-1) will host the non-conference series finale at AMSOIL Arena Saturday. Puck drop is set for 6:07pm.
