Minnesota State Fair may require masks indoors, possible capacity limits

As COVID-19 spreads and the delta variant causes concern, the Minnesota State Fair could opt for a mask mandate when it comes to indoor facilities at the fairgrounds. Additionally, fair organizers could impose a capacity limit.

The fair opens three weeks from Thursday, on Aug. 26.

General Manager Jerry Hammer told Hubbard sister-station KSTP that "all options are being considered at this time." However, no formal decision has been made as of Tuesday.

Many businesses, such as Target, Walmart, Cub, and other venues and institutions in the state, like First Avenue and the University of Minnesota, have announced mask mandates in response to the rapid spread of the highly contagious delta variant and corresponding rise in infections.

"The Minnesota State Fair continues to monitor current guidance from federal and state officials," Hammer said in a statement, in part.

In a message on the Minnesota State Fair website, Hammer wrote:

“Dear Friends,

Your State Fair staff is doing everything we can to present a safe, secure and healthy environment for you at the fair. We can’t do it alone, though, and we need your help. If you’ve been vaccinated, you’ve already done your part. If not, there’s still plenty of time before the fair to be fully vaccinated and enjoy all that the Great Minnesota Get-Back-Together has to offer. Thank you very much!

Jerry Hammer, General Manager”

The Great Minnesota Get-Together will officially return Aug. 26 through Labor Day, Sept. 6, 2021! Updates will be provided on the Minnesota State Fair website.
