Duluth Mayor Emily Larson highlighted success that the City of Duluth had seen in 2021 during a speech to the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce Tuesday morning.

“In 2021, the City of Duluth issued over 7,000 permits for projects in the city of Duluth valued at over $560 million,” exclaimed Mayor Larson. “There has never been a year like that.”

Mayor Larson also highlighted new economic developments the city saw in 2021; a key one being the opening of a new COSTCO.

“We got a tremendous amount of work down last year and it’s really fun to talk about that and to remind people that even in the darkness and in the challenge that it’s ok to shine. Its ok to talk about the accomplishments and to be realistic about all of those opportunities that are around us,” Larson continued.

Looking ahead, Larson expressed excitement over new housing, event, and tourist opportunities coming to Duluth in 2022, specifically citing the Viking Cruise Ships planned to arrive in Duluth this year.

“We’re getting a huge amount of investment and interest nationally [and] not just for economic development projects, but for storytelling and for earned media,” she said.
