Hunter Lellig scored the game-winning goal in the third period lifting the No. 7 UMD men’s hockey team past No. 3 Western Michigan 5-4 Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.

Kobe Roth scored in the first 14 seconds of the game lightning an early spark for the Bulldogs. Matt Anderson also tallied a goal in the first period that would end tied 2-2.

Blake Biondi and Jesse Jacques put up two more goals in the second period taking back the two goal lead 4-2. The Broncos scored twice early in the third, the second on a power play, once again erasing a UMD lead to tie it at 4.

Then at the 8:43 mark Lellig scored to hand UMD the 5-4 series opening victory. This marked his first goal of the season and just second of the senior defenseman’s collegiate career.

Ryan Fanti tallied 24 saves in net for the Bulldogs. They’ll hunt for the sweep Saturday night with puck drop set for 7:07pm.

For fans planning to attend games at AMSOIL Arena, UMD is now requiring proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result from a third-party source not an at home test.
