A third period goal would not be enough to lift second seeded Grand Rapids past top-seeded Andover in the Section 7AA boys hockey championship game on Thursday. The game was a rematch of last season’s section final, where the Huskies walked away the victors.

Andover scored one goal a piece in the first two periods from Gavyn Thoreson and Brooks Cogswell.

Halfway through the third period the Thunderhawks would cut their deficit down to one as Ren Morque would find the back of the net to trail 2-1. Andover however would tally and empty netter from Cayden Casey to secure the 3-1 win.

Grand Rapids was backstopped by a strong Myles Gunderson tallying 34 saves to his Andover counterpart Austin Brauns’ 29 saves.

The Thunderhawks close out the 2021-2022 season with a 20-7-1 overall record. Andover (22-5-1) will make their third straight trip to the Class AA State tournament which begins Thursday, March 10 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
