Igo announces campaign in district that now contains two incumbents

A day after new redistricting maps put two incumbent Minnesota representatives in the same district, one has announced his re-election campaign.

Rep. Spencer Igo (R-Wabana Twp.) and Rep. Julie Sandstede (DFL-Hibbing) are both in the new House District 7A, which includes Hibbing and parts of Itasca and Aitkin counties.

Igo announced Wednesday evening that he plans to seek the seat. He currently represents District 5B.

"My top goal is to protect our way of life and bring our best days to reality on the Iron Range. I will be a champion for mining, timber, tourism, our men and women of labor, and the other great industries that drive the economy of our region," he said in a press release. "Together, we will build the world of tomorrow."

Sandstede, who represents District 6A now, has not yet announced her plans.

Redistricting happens every 10 years and always causes a political shakeup. Candidates, strategists, and voters are still working through what Minnesota’s new maps mean for elected officials’ futures.
