Fourplex fire on Commonwealth Ave. in Duluth

A cat was rescued from a fire at an apartment complex Thursday evening.

The Duluth Fire Department responded to a fourplex on Commonwealth Avenue. Heavy smoke was found coming from the upper floor. Crews were able to make entry into the apartment and extinguish the flames. No fire extension was found in the attic or wall spaces.

When searching the apartment, firefighters found a cat that was alive, but in poor condition. The cat was given oxygen before taken to the Blue Pearl Animal Hospital for evaluation. No humans were injured.

Other units in the building were checked to ensure no other occupants were trapped inside. Two of the four units were okay, but the apartment below the fire is not habitable.

Temporary living arrangements have been made for those who have been displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office. Any inquiries about this incident should be directed to their office as well.
