The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s basketball team has entered opening week for 2021-2022 season.

Two fresh faces in former Duluth East standouts, now freshmen forwards, Mattie Thompson and Noah Paulson are bringing both skill and great chemistry to the courts early on. While the Bulldogs are coming off a shortened 13 game slate last season, the old Greyhound duo is taking momentum from a 2020-2021 Class AAAA state tournament run into their first collegiate seasons.

"Basketball is a game of knowing what your teammates are like and how to play with them, so hopefully that will give us an advantage when we start playing together," Paulson said about Thompson.

"They played together for a long time, they’ve been playing since they were five or six years old. So having that familiarity with each other, but also just familiarity with our program and with UMD and with Duluth, those guys have fit in great," head coach Justin Wieck explained.

The Bulldogs open their season in the American Family Insurance Classic Friday against the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Tip-off is set for 6pm at Romano Gym.
