The Duluth Police Department’s had their first “Get Hooked on Fishing” outing of the year at Mont Du Lac Resort Tuesday afternoon where they also received a sizable donation.

The Larry and Donna Pulkrabek foundation presented the DPD with a check for $9,999 to help fund the outreach program.

The “Get Hooked” program allows the department to take kids in the community out on area lakes, even Lake Superior, to go fishing and build relations between officers and young people in the community.

Lt. Ken Zwak shared a story of how important building those relationships can be.

“I was a street sergeant probably eight years ago, nine years ago, and a person was out of control demanding a supervisor and I rolled up on scene and he saw me and says, ‘Officer Zwak! You used to take me fishing,’” remembered Zwak. “[It] totally de-escalated the situation and it was all because we went and fished from shore together.”
