The Duluth Heights outdoor rink opened for the season Wednesday night.

Kim Oppelt, whose son is about to play his last year in the outdoor association, said she’s felt fortunate that he’s had the opportunity.

“Just to have all of the friendships that he’s built over the years and to be able to just come down to the rink right down the street and see his friends and play some hockey and just to participate in something that’s really exciting to be in our neighborhood. It’s just so unique," explained Oppelt.

“The neighborhood rinks are a dying art, so we have families from all over our neighborhood who come in who run our hockey rink, who coach our kids, and who just keep everything operating here,” Oppelt continued. “It’s not known all the time, but this is a 100% volunteer operation. It’s not the city of Duluth that runs it. It’s all neighbor parents and families.”
