Duluth Firefighters host 9/11 stair climbing event

Local firefighters joined together in the AMSOIL Arena for the September 11th remembrance stair climb. Simulating the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.

Duluth firefighter Katie Sandstrom says, "It’s a tough climb. We are very grateful for those people who gave their lives."

And it is a tough climb. Each firefighter climbs around 2,200 stairs each, combined with wearing all their gear in honor of those who lost their lives. Sandstrom says, "our gear adds a lot of weight so… think of climbing up your stairs up to your office, just imagine adding another 40 to 60 pounds. Plus with gear and tools."

Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj was grateful that the crews could come and do this, He says, “it really shows me how dedicated and prepared our staff are here today.”

And today along with the rest of the crew, a mother daughter duo in remembrance together. Kaite Sandstrom and her twelve year old daughter Avery, walking the 110 stories together. Katie says, “I think that was pretty neat to do side by side with her."

Even though Avery wasn’t wearing gear she was right there with her mom. Walking the final lap together. She says, "I just told her to tell me when her last stairs was and then I did it with her."

With time to reflect on the 343 firefighters who lost their lives fire fighter say that the experience is special. Chief Krizaj says, “walking those shoes, walking those stairs, walking those flights in gear. Just means a little something extra."
