The rhubarb has been harvested, and the festival is just around the corner.

Rhubarb Fest, the annual fundraiser for Chum, is back this weekend. It’s an important boost for Chum’s programs that operate year-round, such as the food shelf and Steve O’Neil Apartments.

"But the other piece of the Rhubarb Festival, it’s really about community," Monica Hendrickson said. "It’s all these churches coming together and diverse backgrounds coming together and celebrating what makes Duluth great."

Thursday and Friday, dozens of volunteers will make hundreds of rhubarb pies and crisps in churches around Duluth.

"We have probably about 800 pies that are being made and probably about 700 rhubarb crisps that are being made. We have gluten-free options, we have muffins, we have upside-down cake, so we have it all," Hendrickson said.

She said they could still use some volunteers Saturday afternoon.
