Bulldogs James, Spicer earn NHL Draft selections

A pair of University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey players heard their names called during day two of the 2022 NHL Draft on Friday.

In the 4th round the Boston Bruins picked up incoming freshman center Cole Spicer 117th overall. A Grand Forks, North Dakota native Spicer tallied 39 points with the U.S. National U18 Team during the 2021-2022 season.

UMD sophomore Dominic James was taken in the 6th round 173rd by the Chicago Blackhawks. This past season he put up six goals and 12 assists for the Bulldogs.

Fellow Bulldog Quinn Olson was drafted by the Bruins in 2019, and Wyatt Kaiser went to Chicago in 2020.

Additionally incoming freshman Isaac Howard was taken in the first round at No. 31 by the Tampa Bay Lightning. In total, 119 Bulldogs have now been selected in the draft since 1970.
