Above average temps abound today and tomorrow, then we trend cooler through the weekend. Today is mostly sunny with highs in low to mid-40s. An east wind around 10 mph keeps temps immediately near Lake Superior in the upper 30s. Clouds increase overnight with a chance for mist and drizzle. Lows will hover near and above freezing, but it’s possible some northern areas dip below freezing with freezing drizzle and a glaze of ice possible for Friday morning’s commute.

Friday then remains mostly cloudy and breezy with highs ranging from upper 30s to mid-40s looking from northwest to southeast across the Northland. A cold front sweeps the region Friday night into Saturday bringing scattered snow showers, a breezy northwest wind, and a return to more seasonable temperatures.

Snow will begin in northwestern Minnesota on Friday and gradually move east reaching from International Falls to the Brainerd Lakes area Friday night. Scattered snow then continues to move from northwest to southeast across the Northland through the day Saturday with lake effect chances lingering along the South Shore Saturday night.

The snowbelt here may see 3-6” locally with a more widespread 1-3” reaching near and east of Ashland. Much of the rest of the region stays under an inch from this round, including the Twin Ports. We look to northern Lake and Cook Co. for over 1” and from Bemidji to just west of International Falls for 1-2”.
