The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources plans to restart in-person hunter safety courses after a hunter advocacy group sued last week alleging the department has no authority to cancel them during the coronavirus pandemic.

The DNR canceled all in-person instruction in March as the pandemic was seizing the country. Kansas-based Hunter Nation filed a lawsuit in state court on June 17 alleging the department is denying people the right to hunt.

The DNR announced on Friday that classes will resume on July 13 with a maximum of 50 people per class and social distancing. The announcement didn't mention the lawsuit.

The use of a face covering will be "strongly recommended," according to the DNR news release. Hand sanitizer will be made available, class equipment will be sanitized, and instruction will be conducted outdoors when possible.

"We wish we had a one-size-fits-all plan. That is not possible because each safety class – whether it is hunter education or about recreational vehicle use – is different by location and the instructor," Lt. Warden Jon King, DNR Bureau of Law Enforcement administrator of the hunter education program, said in the news release. "However, the safety and the well-being of our students and our instructors remains priority Number One regardless of where the class takes place."

King said they intend to go back to normal classes "only when safe."
