Face coverings will be required beginning August 1 at the few remaining McDonald's locations that are not already covered by state and municipal mask requirements.

The restaurant chain announced the requirement Friday. Minnesota, Michigan, and Superior already have mask requirements, and McDonald's said 82% of its locations are already covered by local mask rules.

"The intent of this policy is to take a proactive approach and focus on quickly finding solutions when customers are unable or unwilling to wear a face covering. In those situations where a customer declines to wear a face covering, we’ll put in place additional procedures to take care of them in a friendly, expedited way," the statement said.

The company said it will provide training for staff members so they can address the new policy in a "friendly and positive way."

McDonald's said it is also adding protective panels in both dining rooms and the kitchen. Any dining rooms that are currently closed will remain closed for at least another 30 days.
