A woman in her 70's died in a fatal fire in a Hayward apartment complex Monday evening.

Mike Herrmann, the City of Hayward Fire Chief, said they responded to a room and contents fire that resulted in one fatality at the Fran Mar Apartments Monday night located on 121 Kansas Ave.

The apartment building had approximately 30 residents that were evacuated and temporarily housed at the Hayward Veterans Community Center. Police shut Highway 63 down to allow the occupants to get to the veterans center, with a lot of them in walkers and wheelchairs.

The fire was extinguished and the building was ventilated of smoke. Residents were allowed to come back in approximately two hours later after the fire.

Herrmann said there was heavy smoke and fire damage in the occupants room and smoke throughout the building.

An autopsy was performed on the victim today at the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office. Herrmann also said the relatives of the victim have been notified.

Herrmann said the fire marshal had investigated the fire and completed his investigation, deeming it as an accidental fire.

There was also a rekindle of the fire a couple hours later. Fire crews came back to extinguish it. Residents of the building were evacuated again until the smoke was cleared out of the building.

The City of Hayward Fire Department and the City of Hayward Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire.
