The City of Duluth is asking the public to stay away from the shoreline and Lakewalk Trail today. Strong winds have covered the boardwalk, benches and rocks with thick layers of ice and debris that have been pushed inland.

With the snow covering icy areas, wind and cold temperatures today, pedestrians should play it safe and remain off of the Lakewalk Trail and immediate vicinity until conditions improve. The parking lot by the Lake Superior Maritime Center was closed yesterday due to standing water and icy conditions.

The Duluth Police Department said Saturday that the late-season winter storm caused dangerous conditions in Canal Park and on Park Point.

Police say people were injured while walking on the ice on Park Point beaches.  The department also said the Lift Bridge piers were particularly dangerous.

The storm's winds have caused large waves in Canal Park, which often draws people to the area.  The National Weather Service said it was receiving damage reports from the Duluth area.

A winter storm warning was issued for the Twin Ports, as well as east-central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, and a blizzard warning was posted for Bayfield and Ashland counties. Check the watches and warnings page for the latest.
