The Northland was prepared. Two winter storms were forecast to hit the region over the Thanksgiving holiday and weekend. The first storm on Wednesday brought heavy snow and strong winds to central Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  The City of Duluth advised "no unnecessary travel" due to slippery roads and large waves crashing along the Lakewalk. The DTA activated its Emergency Mainline status.

Wisconsin took the brunt of this storm, with the highest snowfall amounts. A foot of snow fell in Gile and over 10 inches fell in Butternut. Duluth recorded 6.4 inches officially.

Thanksgiving brought a break in the action, but late Friday and througout the weekend, storm number 2 walloped the Northland.

Once again strong winds and heavy snow blanketed the region. No travel advisories were issued, as Park Point was closed to non-residents and a portion of I-35 was closed for awhile. Many who did venture out on Saturday found themselves stuck in the deep snow. There were power outages in Duluth due to heavy snow and wind. The popular sea stack at Tettegouche was toppled from the force of the waves.

Sunday was a better day, as residents began the task of digging out their vehicles and clearing sidewalks. Two days later, some area roads still weren't plowed.

Washburn received 31 inches, the National Weather Service in Duluth registered 21.7 inches and 19.3 inches in Superior. Relentless winds, with gust upwards of 50 mph caused whiteout conditions.
