Looking for something to do this weekend? The Department of Natural Resources is hosting the 9th annual Free Fun Weekend in Wisconsin State Parks and other recreational areas on June 5 and 6. According to the DNR, Wisconsin is home to 49 state parks, 15 state forests, 44 state trails, 84,000 miles of rivers and streams. Park admission fees, fishing licenses and trail passes will be waived for visitors all weekend. Minnesota will have a free day at State Parks on Saturday, June 12.
The Wisconsin DNR provides some helpful things to know before heading out.
Due to high demand, some properties may reach their pre-determined capacity limits. When this happens, properties will close until existing visitors leave, and capacity is reduced.
The DNR reminds residents and visitors to focus on safety. Always wear a life jacket when fishing from a boat, kayak, canoe or paddleboard. Do not consume alcohol or drugs before or during an ATV ride or while operating a boat. Wear a helmet and protective clothing such as eye protection and long pants when operating or riding on an ATV.
All children under 18 must have a minimum Department of Transportation standard motorcycle or ATV helmet. Remember, bicycle helmets are not legal.
