Sabrina Ullman: Cooler Saturday; HOT Sunday
A cold front is passing through the Northland this afternoon to evening, bringing a few sprinkles. This cold front is not very cold, but it is bringing wildfire smoke from Canada with it.
Widespread smoke is expected tonight, impacting those in sensitive groups. Temperatures will drop to the 40s, and there will be a breezy north wind.
The first day of the Minnesota fishing season will be noticeably cooler with an east wind. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the 60s to low 70s, but areas near the lake will only reach the upper 40s and 50s.

For those making Mother’s Day plans, a location with air conditioning is recommended on Sunday. Grand Marais will be comfortable with a high of 62 degrees, and Canal Park will also only reach the low 70s. In the rest of the area, temperatures will climb to the 80s and low 90s.
In addition to it being hot on Sunday, there will also be low relative humidity and strong winds. This increases the chance of fires spreading, so a Fire Weather Watch has been issued. This watch is in effect from 11 am to 10 pm on Sunday.
We have been dry due to an Omega Block pattern over the U.S., and by the end of the weekend, this will shift to a Rex Block pattern. For us, this means dry and hot conditions early next week. We will see some relief by the end of the week with rain likely on Thursday.
