Lea Zmurko: Cold but becoming comfortable

January 7: The dry chill continues

It is another cool and quiet day across the Northland, light flurries cross the South Shore but sunshine remains abundant elsewhere.

Starting the morning in single digits near the lake or even below zero further north as cold and quiet conditions continue through the middle of the week.

Winds weakened overnight and now windchill will bottom out in the negative teens across the Iron Range. Cloud coverage will also begin to increase however there will still be widespread stretches of sunshine mixed in for a party sunny Tuesday.

A trace of snow can be recorded tonight and into Wednesday as the light flurries move across the Northland, the lack of moisture will result on only a couple tenths of an inch being recorded. Along the South Shore around 0.5 to 2 inches of snow is likely as lake effect snow remains light and winds continue to persist in a favorable direction from the northwest. Greater amounts of snow will fall across the Apostle Islands and northern Iron County.

When the winds switch to a southerly flow Wednesday evening, it will end the lake effect precipitation and bring a trace to 0.5” of snow across the North Shore out to the tip of the Arrowhead.

As temperatures climb back up to the mid-teens and low 20s by the end of the week moisture content will improve for the arrival of a clipper by the end of the work week.
