"It's always freezing up at Giant's Ridge, so I'm pretty excited that it's this warm because I don't do well in the cold weather. This is really nice," said Hermantown senior Ashley Winberg.

For more than 175 prep athletes that race downhill on both the Innsbruck and Helsinki courses, the weather didn't effect their approach to the race.

"It does change the snow a little bit, but the snow is great today so there really is no issue," she added.

Hermantown senior Austin Danelski said it was nice change of pace from he has raced in the past.

"The weather is awesome. This is I think the first time I've been to Giant's Ridge and it's actually been warm, so it's super nice out," said Danelski.

For Northlanders competing, it's always special hosting the meet in their neck of the woods instead of enduring a long bus ride.

"Both runs that we have, the races are on are a little more challenging than what you would find in the cities, so it's fun to see something like this," he added.

"It's got some like competitiveness to the hills. It's not super flat so it makes it interesting to see who really will come out on top and it's different than a lot of other areas," said Winberg.

The Alpine race is just day one of the State Alpine Skiing Meet. Tuesday Giants Ridge will host the prep Nordic Ski athletes for day two of the state championships.
