Grand Rapids couple celebrate 70 years of marriage

Mr. and Mrs. Smith mark 70 years of marriage, and reflect on the milestone.

Bob and Marney Smith met in high school in Minneapolis. “I remember his red hair,” she told us. “It helped a lot.”

They were in the same friend group, but didn’t date. “I dated her friends,” Bob recalled.

But when they both attended the University of Minnesota for college, they ended up falling in love.

March 19, 1955, they tied the knot.

Bot shares more about that day. “It was a beautiful 72 degrees. I was still in school,” Bob said. “We were broke.”

They moved to Grand Rapids for Bob’s job, which was with Goodyear. “He traveled a lot,” Marney joked.

There, they raised four kids. Now they have grand kids and great-grand kids.

“Love has to be there, but so does respect,” Bob said. “You have to be able to negotiate, and give and take.”

Congratulations to the Smiths!
