Superior seeks applicants for council vacancy

The City of Superior is now taking applications for people who want to take over Craig Sutherland’s 8th District seat on the Superior City Council when he resigns at the end of the month.

People who are interested in being considered for the appointment need to submit a letter of interest to the Superior City Clerk by 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 1. The applications can be made by email to cityclerk@ci.superior.wi.us or via letter to Superior City Clerk, 1316 N 14th St, Ste 200, Superior WI 54880. A resume can be included but is not required.

City Clerk Camila Ramos said the city council is expected to consider the applicants at their Dec. 7 meeting. Applicants will have an opportunity to address the council.

People with questions about the duties and responsibilities of a city councilor, or about the district’s boundary lines, can call the City Clerk’s Office at 715-395-7200. The 8th District includes the northwestern part of the Billings Park neighborhood.

The person who is chosen will serve until April 2022, when a special election will be held for a one-year term. The special election will be held on April 5 alongside the regular elections for odd-numbered city council seats.

If more than two people file to run in the special election, a primary will be held on Feb. 15, 2022.

Sutherland had been re-elected to a two-year term in April 2021, so the one-year term starting in 2022 will bring the district back to its normal election cycle.
