The Superior Police Department is hiring for a new position, to better connect the officers with the people they serve and protect.
"What we're trying to do is give our police department more tools, more resources to solve the things they're struggling to solve right now," said Mayor Jim Paine Monday afternoon, saying the city feels that offering this new position is necessary to assist in making an impact in the overall health and safety of the Superior community.
The Department has approved a new role, titled "Coordinated Response Specialist." They will be responsible for connecting people with local mental health, drug treatment, and shelter providers.
"This is a new position with a new set of professional skills that we're bringing into modern policing. And that's in recognition of the fact that sometimes public health, public safety, quality of life has threatened by long-term issues like drug abuse- or substance abuse in general, addiction, domestic violence, chronic mental health issues, poverty, homelessness," said Mayor Paine. "These things can't be solved by quick response the way we currently respond to crisis. And so we need to bring in a new set of professional skills that is capable of meeting this challenge."
Superior Police is seeking highly motivated candidates who are familiar with crisis intervention, and a working knowledge of local laws pertaining to mental health, chemical abuse, and homelessness. Mayor Paine described a few desired skills; someone who has studied social work or criminal justice, or a background in case management or humanities.
"Somebody who is capable of responding to human challenges," said Mayor Paine. "And working with people that are potentially in crisis, particularly over the long term. Somebody with that education or professional background should very seriously look at this job description. Because, the person we hire now will be influential in how we change our police department. They're going to help make changes to this job description, and job descriptions for future positions."
"A person's education and professional background isn't gonna be the final determining factor here. Our police department engages in character-based hiring, so they're looking for people that have compassion, that have a strong connection to the community, that are non-judgmental, that can find the best in people, and to help solve the problems that shouldn't define people, and to make sure that every single person in our community feels they matter, and that they feel like we think they matter."
