The Superior City Council has appointed Robert Pierce to fill a vacant seat for the next five months.

Pierce was chosen from among four applicants for the 8th District seat during Tuesday's meeting and took office immediately upon being chosen. He takes the place of Craig Sutherland, who resigned at the end of November.

Pierce works as a plumber and pipefitter, holding a license in Minnesota since 2004. He attended UW-Superior in the late 1990s, has worked as an official for the Minnesota State High School League and Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association since 2001, and owned and operated a resort from 2014 to 2019.

"Because my professional goals align with the city's mission and values, this opportunity is especially exciting. I believe my communication; critical thinking and collaboration abilities will support and drive your continued organizational success," Pierce wrote in his application.

The other applicants for the seat were Edward C. Gallagher, Randy Gordon, and former Councilor Mike Herrick.

Pierce will serve until April, when a special election will be held to elect a person to serve for one year. A regular election for a two-year term will then take place in April 2023.
