The Superior Police Department says a man is in custody in the suspected homicide of his mother on Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to a residence at the corner of Norwood Avenue and Gates Avenue, in the Central Park neighborhood, at 6:55 a.m. after a 911 caller reported that there was a person in need of medical attention. Police say a woman had "sustained significant trauma" and, despite care from medical personnel, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they believe the woman died as a result of injuries sustained in an altercation with her 39-year-old son. He is being held in the Douglas County Jail awaiting a possible charge of first-degree intentional homicide.

The suspect does not have any previous convictions related to violence. He was convicted of two misdemeanor counts of fraudulent use of a credit card in 2005 and one misdemeanor count of theft in a business setting in 2007.

Police say the death was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.
