Four apply for Superior City Council vacancy

Four people, including a former city councilor, have applied to fill a vacancy on the Superior City Council.

The council is due to consider the temporary appointment to Craig Sutherland’s former seat at its Dec. 7 meeting. Sutherland resigned from his 8th District seat at the end of November, citing his family, health, and business needs.

The agenda packet for the Dec. 7 meeting shows that Edward C. Gallagher, Randy Gordon, Mike Herrick, and Robert Pierce have applied for the seat. Herrick represented the 8th District for eight years before losing narrowly to Sutherland in 2017.

The applicants are expected to have a chance to address the council at Tuesday’s meeting.

The person who is chosen will serve until April 2022, when a special election will be held for a one-year term. The seat will then go up for election on its regular two-year cycle in April 2023.
