The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is among numerous events cancelled on Tuesday as the COVID-19 pandemic moves into the summer.

The event had been scheduled for August 21 and 22 at Barker's Island in Superior.  Organizers say there is too much uncertainty involving the pandemic, and the festivals executive committee made the decision to cancel to keep racers and spectators safe.

"Each dragon boat contains 20 people in very close proximity to each other," festival co-chair Patricia Finney said in a news release. "Since we don’t know where things will stand with social distancing guidelines by the time of the festival, combined with the time and effort it takes to make this festival the special event that it is, we decided to take an abundance of caution and keep people safe by cancelling this year’s festival."

This year's event was slated to benefit 23rd Veteran, a local nonprofit group that helps veterans.

"We want to thank all the teams and partners who had committed to our 2020 festival," festival co-chair Mark Johnson said in a news release. "While we’re canceling this year’s festivals with heavy hearts, we’re looking forward to the 2021 festival–which will be our 20th annual–and focusing on making this our best yet."

The 20th Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is now scheduled for August 27 and 28, 2021.
