Wisconsin wolf kill nearly 100 animals over target

Keith Warnke, the administrator of the DNR's Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Division, said 216 wolves had been registered by hunters and trappers by 3 p.m. Thursday, which was the deadline to report wolves killed in the zones that had closed 24 hours earlier. The state target kill had been 119 wolves.

The hunt began Monday and could have run through Sunday but the DNR shut it down Wednesday afternoon as it became clear hunters would exceed the target They also exceeded state targets during the 2012, 2013 and 2014 wolf seasons.

Warnke said 86% of wolves were taken through hunting by the use of dogs. 5% were taken by trappers and 9% were taken by other methods. 54% of the wolves killed were male and 46% were female.

The DNR estimates about 1,000 wolves roam the state.
