The University of Wisconsin, Superior (UWS) baseball team threw the first pitches of their Yellowjacket Super Series on Saturday afternoon.

The intrasquad games are a way the team can see some action in the fall, even if that means playing against each other.

"Any time we can get them in a game like environment, having the umpires here, I think helps them get prepared for what they're going to see this spring, what they're going to experience," said UWS head baseball coach Frank Pufall.

"70 percent of our roster hasn't played a conference game with us before. So anyway that we can simulate it I think is definitely a benefit to their development."

The best-of-five series is set to run through October 31st.

It's also offered the team a chance to get back on the field after their schedule was cut short in the spring. UWS played six games before the pandemic canceled their season.

"I think the idea of being able to come out here [Saturday] and play a baseball game, just play baseball, has really helped [the players] kind of remember and stay focused on what we're doing, and the type of things we can look forward to coming up in the spring," added Coach Pufall.

Yellowjacket softball, and men's and women's soccer are also playing intraquad tournaments.
