UMD men’s hockey outlasts No. 5 Denver in nail biting 3rd period

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey team defeated No. 5 University of Denver in a close 4-3 matchup at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth on Friday, January 24th.

Late in the first period, Aaron Pionk would net the first goal of the game on the power play, assisted by Max Plante and Zam Plante. Early in the second period, Denver’s Sam Harris would tie things 1-1. UMD would strike back with two goals within five minutes of each other, first by Max Plante on the power play, then Kyle Bettens would score his first goal of the season to put the Bulldogs up 3-1. In the third period, UMD’s Anthony Menghini would put the score at 4-1, before Denver would net 2 goals late in the game from Jared Wright and Jack Devine to bring the final score to 4-3.

UMD’s goaltender Klayton Knapp would make 42 saves during the game, earning a save percentage of 93.3%. Denver’s goaltender Freddie Haylk would make 26 saves, earning a save percentage of 86.7%.
