UMD men's basketball protects home court, women fall to SMSU

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s basketball team bested Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) on Wednesday, however the Bulldog women fell at Romano Gym.

First up, the UMD men took down the No. 17 Mustangs 63-44 to earn their second straight win. The Bulldogs outshot SMSU 31-20 in the first half and 32-24 in the second. UMD’s Charlie Katona led the game with 19 points, while Joshua Brown had 14 and Jayden Johnson posted 10. Austin Andrews led in rebounds with 13.

The Bulldogs improve to 15-7 overall, and are 12-1 at home. They next visit Augustana Saturday, February 8 at 3:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls.

The UMD women tipped off next, but would fall 89-63. The Mustangs outshot the Bulldogs just 35-33 in the first half, but put up 54 points to UMD’s 30 in the second half. Myra Moorjani led UMD with 22 points, while Johanna Miller added 13 points and 10 rebounds. SMSU’s Bri Stoltzman led the game with 27 points.

UMD falls to 7-15 on the season after dropping their fifth straight game. They next visit Augustana Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls.
