Thanks in large part to a local color commentator asking for some stats on Superior's Jason Kalin to use in his broadcast on the boys hockey head coach, Kalin had to organize information on the team. In doing so, he realized he had 299 career wins. He decided to keep it secret and not put any pressure on his team. On Wednesday night, Superior got an overtime win against Wausau West which marked win number 300.

"I feel blessed to be a part of this program," he said. "It's a milestone for me and I know Mike Randolph across the bridge and a couple other pretty esteemed coaches have some big numbers. I don't think I'll ever catch that, but this for me being game 501 and win 300, it's pretty nice," he added.

Kalin is Spartan through and through having won state championships as a player and as a coach. In his 20th season, he said once he let the news sink in he wanted to thank those around him.

"It's pretty special to me because every guy that I have coaching with me right now was former player," said Kalin."I emailed them today and said 'hey guys, thanks for helping me out on both ends of the spectrum.'"

"He's put his heart and soul into it," said Superior boys hockey assistant coach Evan Nelson about the program. "Playing for Jason, I learned a lot as a player. Now as a coach, now you see all the day-to-day stuff and how much work goes into it and the time that he's put in. That makes it even more special," he added.

A few of Kalin's assistant coaches with the Spartans were some of his very first players in the early 2000's.

Superior is back in action tomorrow night hosting Hermantown.
