Preseason practices for prep football teams begin this week. For Superior, that means kicking off practice with a Spartan tradition.

For nearly 15 years, the Superior football team has signaled the start of organized practice with what they call the Spartan Olympics.

Its a day solely dedicated to testing various lifting activities including the bench press, parallel squat and power clean. Then, they'll do some running, testing speed, agility and endurance.

Since starting the Spartan Olympics, Superior football head coach Bob DeMeyer said the weather has always cooperated, but Monday was a different story as it poured at the start of outdoor testing. However, rain or shine, it's great way to see where the Spartans stack after putting in work over the summer.

"It's just a way to put a lot of emphasis on why it's important to prepare yourself to play," said DeMeyer. "It's a fun competitive day. We compare our scores from today to teams in the past," he added.

"It kind of gets us ready and kind of gives everybody motivation to get pumped up for the season," said senior offensive and defensive lineman Wyatt Reed. "It makes other people compete more knowing where other people are at."

Superior's season gets started Friday, August 23. The Spartans will face Somerset on the road.
