Section 7AA boys hockey semifinals set as Rock Ridge holds off Duluth East

The top-seeded Rock Ridge boys hockey team quelled a comeback from No. 8 Duluth East Tuesday to win their Section 7AA quarterfinal 4-2 at the Iron Trail Motors Event Center.

The Wolverines’ Grady Dimberio scored the sole goal of the first period. In the second Zac Norberg made it 2-0 Rock Ridge, and Dimberio netted his second of the night to make it 3-0 after two. In the third though Duluth East’s Jax Edgerton and Marccus Anttila scored to make it a one goal game, but Dimberio added one more for the hat-trick and 4-2 Rock Ridge win. The Wolverines’ Wyatt Jonassen made 15 saves in goal, while Nolan Nygaard made 25 for the Greyhounds. Duluth East ends their season 4-23.

Rock Ridge improves to 21-3-2, and advances to face No. 5 Duluth Marshall (15-9-2) in the semifinals. The Hilltoppers knocked off No. 4 Forest Lake 6-5 thanks to a four goal third period. Braydon Hannula scored the game-winner with less than two minutes left in the game.

The other semifinal will be between No. 2 Grand Rapids (16-8-2) and No. 3 Andover (13-13). Andover shutout No. 6 Duluth Denfeld 6-0, while Grand Rapids rolled past No. 7 Cambridge-Isanti 9-0. Jameson Duell had a hat-trick for the Thunderhawks. The Huskies and Thunderhawks’ semifinal will be a rematch of last season’s Section 7AA title game, where Grand Rapids won 3-2 in double overtime to go to state.
