The Proctor trap team sets sights on fifth straight state

For the fifth straight year, the Proctor trap team will be pulling the trigger at the Minnesota State tournament. Proctor scored a 473 out of 500 in the qualifying event, taking 29th.

In addition to the team qualifying, so did five individuals, including their sole female representative, senior Layla Eckstrom, who shot a 90 in the qualifying event.

“As a senior, it’s kind of just like the capstone on my journey as a trap shooter in high school, and I’m really happy that I’m able to end this the way it is,” said Eckstrom.

Joining Eckstrom in the individual tournament will be Henry Napoli, who shot a 99 out of 100 in the qualifying event; Layne Graves, who shot a 94; Austin Carlson, who shot a 90; and Thor Forstrom, who shot an 88.

“We have a good core group of top shooters in the state. We had five students qualify in the top 100 out of 10,866 kids. So that’s five of those came from Proctor.” said Proctor head coach Allan Carlson.

Carlson is in his 12th season at the helm of the Proctor trap team. Sophomore individual qualifier Henry Napoli says the mental aspect of trap shooting plays a big role in the team’s success.

“If you’re mad, you’re definitely going to miss some. If you miss one and you’re just going to be mad about it, you’re going to miss more. You just got to be positive about it and think about shooting good,” said Napoli.

The Minnesota State tournament takes place on June 20t at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake. Click here to view the full tournament schedule.
