Ashley Birdsall played prep hockey in Duluth and college hockey across the bridge for UW-Superior. She even spent time with the Minnesota Whitecaps in their independent days. Now, she has signed to play professionally with the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). Not only is she a skater, she's a soldier. She's also Captain Ashley Birdsall of the Minnesota Army National Guard.

"It has always been the goal to play at the professional level and i have had all of the support from the chain of command that I've needed and going to be flexible and they are giving me the opportunity to continue my responsibilities in the Army National Guard and compete in hockey for the season," said Birdsall by telephone on Wednesday afternoon.

The 29-year old is currently in St. Paul and is in her ninth year of service with the Minnesota Army National Guard. She'll head to Buffalo next month to get ready for the season. On the ice, she plays both forward and defense.
